THE RANKING ORDER OF FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE PURCHASING A FRANCHISE BUSINESS: QUALITATIVE STUDY
Martin J. McDermott Jason Jackson Purdue University Global ABSTRACT This qualitative study intends to find out the “ranking order” of 12 factors (advisory council, culture, due diligence, hard work, open mind, passion, return on investment, self- assessment, support, system, talk to existing & previous franchisees, and value), recommended by a counsel from “industry experts”, that influence purchasing a franchise business. Utilizing a sample of podcast interviews, the ranking order indicates that there are six major factors: Passion (first rank), talk to existing & previous franchisees (second rank), due diligence and franchise system ((third rank), return on investment and franchise support (fourth rank). The ranking order of the marginal factors was as follows: hard work, open mind, self-assessment, and values took the fifth rank. Finally, culture and advisory council took the sixth and the seventh ranks, respectively. Therefore, the authors will focus on the six major factors. Keywords: Passion, talk to existing & previous franchisees, due diligence, franchise system, return on investment, support, hard work, open mind, self-assessment, values, culture, advisory council
FORGIVENESS AND RESTORATIVE JUSTICE IN THE FACE OF HUMAN INJUSTICE: A PROPOSAL FOR LEADERSHIP
Jeffrey L. McClellan Frostburg State University Ahmad Tootoonchi University of Tennessee at Martin ABSTRACT Among the most difficult questions leaders must address are why must so many suffer?! Why do humans kill, maim, abuse, and destroy one another . . . and, even more importantly, what can be done to stop this onslaught of evil? This article asserts that the answer to that question can be found by understanding the spiritual aspect of human existence, which involves connectedness. Spirituality and connectedness are defined and discussed, evidence of spiritual decay is proffered and explained, and a proposal for leadership based on embracing the humanity of others through forgiveness and restorative justice is outlined. Keywords: Forgiveness, justice, suffer, destroy, onslaught, evil, spirituality, connectedness, spiritual decay, leadership, humanity
INTERACTIVE TOOL FOR K-MEANS CLUSTERING
Levon R. Hayrapetyan Houston Christian University ABSTRACT k-Means clustering is one of the most used clustering methods in data mining. It uses “centroids”- k different randomly generated points in the data set and assigns every data point to the nearest centroid. After every point has been assigned, the centroid is moved to the average of all the points assigned to it. Then the process repeats, i.e., every point is reassigned to its nearest new centroid and the centroids are moved to the average of points assigned to it. The clustering process is done when no point changes to an assigned centroid. In this study, an interactive method is developed which allows us to create random data sets with two variables, visualize the assignment of data points to current centroids, as well as visualize the positions of newly calculated centroids. This tool significantly improves students’ understanding of the internal logic of k-means clustering. It will be used in data analytics-related courses. DATA-DRIVEN DECISION-MAKING IN A MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS COURSE: THE CASE OF ECOTOURISM TRAVEL AGENCY
Mohammad Dadashzadeh Oakland University ABSTRACT The required business core curriculum course in Management Information Systems, a primarily lecture-oriented, survey course taught in junior or senior year, provides an invaluable opportunity to teach students to advance their hands-on skills working with databases and spreadsheets in an individualized case study for data-driven decision-making. This paper presents a case study that successfully leverages standard course coverage in advanced querying in Access and multi-dimensional data analysis using Excel to present each student with a randomized data set for a data-driven product discontinuation decision-making scenario. The phased presentation of the case study and the pedagogical opportunities it affords are discussed. Keywords: Business curriculum, management information systems course, Microsoft Access, Excel pivot charts, product discontinuation case study
PRIVACY POLICY PROVISION PATTERNS AMONG THE TOP ONE HUNDRED NONPROFIT WEBSITES
Janet Stephens Gundars Kaupins Boise State University ABSTRACT Nonprofits in need of developing or refining their website privacy policies might benefit from reviewing the content of other nonprofits’ privacy policies. They could do “one-stop- shopping by looking for the longest policies, highest website rankings, most recent policy years, or highest reading grade level. These four characteristics might increase their chance of finding desirable provisions beyond only using keywords and key phrases. The use of only keywords or phrases might not be beneficial in some cases because illegal, awkwardly worded, and out-of- context phrases might be found. This study incorporated human and machine learning content analyses of 100 nonprofits’ online privacy policies to find the association between 71 nonprofit privacy policy provisions and the four characteristics. Although the number of words in the policies positively correlated with the sum of privacy policy provisions, the number of words did not have many more specific provisions than policy age, reading grade level, and website rank. The number of words has the most significant relationship with liability and fraud-related provisions. Other significant relationships with the number of words include the personally identifiable information collected such as emails and photos. Longer privacy policies do not significantly increase the chances of finding specific provisions. Keywords: Privacy policies, reading level, nonprofits, policy length, websites, confidentiality
