ABSTRACT
The required business core curriculum course in Management Information Systems, a
primarily lecture-oriented, survey course taught in junior or senior year, provides an invaluable
opportunity to teach students to advance their hands-on skills working with databases and
spreadsheets in an individualized case study for data-driven decision-making. This paper presents
a case study that successfully leverages standard course coverage in advanced querying in Access
and multi-dimensional data analysis using Excel to present each student with a randomized data
set for a data-driven product discontinuation decision-making scenario. The phased presentation
of the case study and the pedagogical opportunities it affords are discussed.
